Head of the Department – Dr. Tech. Sciences, Senior Researcher Petro Vasko;
Scientific Secretary of the Department – Ph.D. tech. Sciences Anastasia Moroz.
The areas of research of the Department meet the goals of sustainable development of Ukraine, presented in the National Report of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine (September 15, 2017), which aims to adapt 17 global Sustainable Development Goals officially approved by the UN General Assembly, including “ensuring the availability and management of water resources and sanitation for all” and “ensuring access for all people to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy sources “. Among key research issues there are:
– hydropower resources of rivers and water flows, energy of sea waves, tides and currents;
– hydropower potential of small rivers of Ukraine taking into account environmental requirements and modern regulatory framework;
– energy efficiency of hydro units of small hydroelectric power plants at variable pressures and water consumption;
– development of the scientific and technological bases for improving the energy efficiency of small hydropower plants under environmental restrictions on the use of water runoff;
– development of the scientific and technological bases of hydroaccumulation of energy from renewable sources;
– development and improvement of the installations for the conversion of hydropower resources into electricity, determination of their technical and economic characteristics;
– development of the regulatory and technical base of small hydropower.
The Department hosts the Processes and systems of transformation of hydropower resources seminar of the Scientific Council on “Scientific foundations of electricity” of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
Employees of the Department took part in expert meetings to discuss the state of Ukrainian hydropower and environmental aspects of its further development, provide necessary advice, participate in public discussions, including: “Current state, problems and prospects of hydropower in Ukraine” with National Institute for Strategic Studies in 2014.; “Small hydropower plants. Prospects and Threats ” with Lviv Regional State Administration in 2014; “The Draft of the Roadmap for the development of small hydropower for the period up to 2020” by Scientific and Technical Council of the Association Ukrhydroenergo in 2015; “Seminar on the development of small hydropower plants for Central and Eastern Europe” held by International Center for Small Hydropower in Hangzhou (November 29 – December 19, 2017); “Potential for the development of small hydropower plants taking into account environmental constraints”with International Forum Innovation Market in 2018; International Scientific and Practical Conference “Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in the XXI Century” in 2015-2020.
The department provides educational and professional training for doctors of philosophy in the field of electrical engineering (industry code 14) in electrical engineering, electrical engineering and electromechanics (specialty code 141) according to the Program of the discipline “Processes of converting energy flows with variable parameters into electricity.” License of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine series LV №000424, order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine dated 23.12.2016 №1512l.

POTENTIAL FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF SMALL HPPS ON THE TERRITORY OF UKRAINE, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Environmental restrictions on the use of the river’s hydropower resources includes the use of river flow within 10-90% of the annual runoff, considering: restrictions, floods and inundations; sanitary pass; continuous operation of fishermen; operational measures to regulate water flow through structures; bn regulation of hydropower capacity on the watercourse.
Restrictions on the use of areas for the construction of small hydropower plants: national nature parks, reserves, natural monuments, mineral and mineral water deposits, historical and cultural areas, land for special purposes, large areas of flooding.
Basic operational requirements for small hydropower plants in accordance with environmental restrictions are stated below.
The small hydropower project should provide the unimpeded migration of fish.
The hydraulic system of a small hydropower plant should not cause any long-term degradation of biodiversity or cause serious damage to river bio complexes.
A small hydropower plant must operate with such an operating mode that is as close as possible to the conditions of natural river runoff.
