The Department conducts fundamental and applied research in the field of the physical and engineering aspects of solar energy with the aim of: 

  • identifying promising areas for harnessing solar energy; 
  • developing mathematical models for solar energy conversion into electrical and thermal energy; 
  • developing materials and energy-efficient designs for photovoltaic modules and solar thermal collectors, as well as creating energy supply systems based on these technologies. 

At present, the Department’s research focuses on three main applications of solar energy: 

  • generating electricity using photovoltaic converters; 
  • producing thermal energy using solar thermal collectors of various designs; 
  • cogenerating electrical and thermal energy. 

The Department offers scientific support for national initiatives focused on solar energy development. Presently, this encompasses the “Solar Energy” component of the State Programme, which aims to promote non-conventional and renewable energy sources, including small hydropower and heat power engineering. 

Examples of Implemented Projects 

  • Dobrovliany PV Power Plant, with an installed capacity of 4.17 MW, located in Zalishchyky District, Ternopil Region. 
  • Sychivka PV Power Plant, with an installed capacity of 2.0 MW, located in Khrystynivka District, Cherkasy Region. 
  • Artek Solar Power Plant (Artek SPP), with an installed capacity of 1.0 MW, equipped with an automated dispatching and visualization system, located on the premises of the Artek International Children’s Centre in Hurzuf, Autonomous Republic of Crimea.
