DEPARTMENT OF WIND ENERGY

Acting Head of the Department – Kateryna Petrenko, PhD
The Department of Wind Energy focuses on fundamental and applied research in wind energy science and engineering with the following objectives:
- to identify promising applications of wind energy;
- to develop and maintain a database of wind parameters based on verified data sources;
- to assess the wind energy potential of Ukraine’s onshore and offshore areas;
- to develop efficient methods for converting and stabilising electricity generated by wind power plants (WPPs), including evaluating the potential role of green hydrogen produced by water electrolysis using electricity generated by WPPs as an energy storage medium;
- to determine the parameters of systems enabling the efficient use of green hydrogen for balancing power grids at different levels;
- to develop methods for automating and optimising the operation of wind turbines and wind energy systems;
- to provide scientific support for the development, design, construction, and operation of wind turbines and wind power plants;
- to promote the scientific, technological, and socio-economic development of the wind energy sector.

The Department employs 26 staff members, including 16 researchers with 9 in part-time roles, among them:
- 7 Doctors of Technical Sciences;
- 1 Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences;
- 1 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD);
- 3 Candidates of Technical Sciences;
- 1 Candidate of Chemical Sciences.
The Department’s research shows that Ukraine has large onshore and offshore regions rich in wind energy potential. Modern wind turbines in these zones can produce electricity with a capacity factor between 0.20 and 0.40.
One of the Institute’s activities is to provide scientific, technical, and organisational support for the development, construction, and operation of wind power plants in Ukraine. The Institute’s specialists have extensive experience in providing comprehensive support throughout all stages of wind power project preparation and implementation.
